Reticulocytes are red cells only a day or two old, still carrying traces of the machinery that formed them. Counting how many are circulating shows the doctor how fast the bone marrow is turning out replacements at that moment. It is nearly always read together with the haemoglobin and the rest of the blood count.

Doctors order it for anaemia that needs explaining, to see whether iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid treatment is taking effect, and to follow the marrow's recovery after blood loss or chemotherapy.
