This is not a laboratory test. Plaster of Paris bandage is wrapped and moulded around the limb over a soft lining, then left to set hard so that the broken bone is held still while it knits. The charge covers the material and the application; any X-rays taken before or after the cast are billed on their own.

Doctors order it for fractures, after a displaced bone has been set, and for sprains and injuries that need the part kept still.
