The full blood count with the cells examined under the microscope tells the surgeon and anaesthetist whether you are anaemic, whether an infection is brewing and whether you have enough platelets to stop bleeding after the incision. Your blood group is established at the same time so that matched blood can be arranged should it be needed.
Doctors order it for admission ahead of planned or emergency major surgery.
