The level climbs when the flow of bile is obstructed, and it also responds to alcohol and to a number of ordinary medicines. Since so many things push it up, it is read alongside the other liver enzymes; used that way it helps show whether a raised alkaline phosphatase is coming from the liver or from bone.

Doctors order it for jaundice, itching, upper abdominal pain, abnormal liver readings on an earlier report and alcohol-related liver disease.
