Rather than looking for the organism itself, VDRL picks up antibodies the body produces during a syphilis infection. It is a screening test, so a reactive result is taken forward to a more specific confirmatory test. Certain other conditions can also make it reactive without syphilis being present.

Doctors order it for antenatal check-ups, before surgery or blood donation, and when a sexually transmitted infection is suspected.
