The scanner takes thin slice images of the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bowel and the blood vessels around them. The plain run is done first. A dye is then injected into a vein, which brightens the vessels and brings out areas of inflammation, collection or growth that the plain images can miss.
Doctors order it for unexplained abdominal pain, suspected appendicitis or abscess, jaundice, an abnormal ultrasound finding, injury after an accident, and to look at a mass and how far it extends.
