The scan shows the bones of the lower back closely: fractures, a vertebra slipped forward, arthritis of the small joints behind, and narrowing of the canal the nerves run through. Bone shows up better than soft tissue on CT, so this is chosen when the question is about the vertebrae themselves or when an MRI cannot be done.

Doctors order it for lower back pain that has not settled, pain running down the leg, injury to the back, suspected fracture in thinning bone, and planning or checking spine surgery.
