A chest X-ray gives one flat shadow of the whole chest. The CT builds slices instead, so small nodules, patches of infection, scarring, fluid and enlarged lymph nodes can be seen separately. Plain means no dye is injected, which suits questions about the lung tissue itself.
Doctors order it for a cough or breathlessness that has not settled, an abnormal chest X-ray, suspected tuberculosis, a shadow that needs a closer look, and follow-up of known lung disease.
