What it showsఈ స్కాన్ దేని కోసం
A CT scanner takes X-ray images from all around you and reconstructs them into slices through the head. It is fast — the scan itself takes seconds — and it is the standard urgent test after a head injury or a suspected stroke.
Doctors also order it for headache that has changed or will not settle, dizziness, blackouts and seizures.
You lie still on a table that moves slowly through a ring. Nothing touches you and it is not enclosed like an MRI tunnel. Tell us if you are pregnant or might be.

- The ring is open, not a tunnel
- You lie on a table that passes through a short open ring. Your head is inside it for a minute or two and the rest of you is not, with nothing enclosing your face. Patients who cannot manage an MRI tunnel, and restless elderly patients, usually get through this.
- A normal scan early in a stroke is expected
- In the first hours of an infarct a plain CT often looks normal. It is done urgently to rule out a bleed, because that one finding changes treatment immediately. We tell you this at the time so a normal report is not read as nothing being wrong.
- Plain means no injection and no cannula
- Nothing goes in by vein, so there is no dye reaction to think about and no kidney function test needed beforehand. Nothing to fast for either. A contrast study, if your doctor wants one later, is a separate request.
- Pacemakers and implants are not a problem
- Metal in the body delays or rules out an MRI, and the implant papers have to be checked first. A CT is unaffected by a pacemaker or an old hip replacement. After a fall in an elderly patient with either of those, the CT is usually the scan that can go ahead.
- ₹2,200 for the plain CT brain
- That is the whole cost, and it is printed on the public price list. The report and the images are included in it. Nine CT studies are listed there, so you can check the rate for the one your doctor has asked for before you come.
