A tiny amount of purified protein from the TB bacterium is injected just under the skin of the forearm. You come back after two to three days so that the raised firm patch can be measured across in millimetres. It is that measurement, not the redness, which is written in the report, along with the date of the injection and the date of reading.
Doctors order it for suspected tuberculosis, a long cough or fever with weight loss, a child who has been in contact with someone with TB, and screening before treatments that lower immunity.
