Small pads are stuck on the skin over the leg and the foot. A brief mild electrical pulse is given at one point and the response is picked up at another. The time taken and the size of that response tell whether a nerve is being squeezed, damaged along its length, or losing its outer covering. The pulses feel like a quick tap or tingle.
Doctors order it for numbness, tingling or burning in the feet, weakness or foot drop, suspected nerve damage from diabetes, sciatica-like pain, and to locate where a nerve is being pinched.
