Tuberculin, prepared from the TB bacterium, is placed just under the skin of the inner forearm with a fine needle, raising a small bleb. The arm is examined again after two to three days and any firm swelling is measured in millimetres. Your doctor reads that width along with your age, BCG vaccination history and the rest of the picture.
Doctors order it for suspected tuberculosis, contact with a person who has TB, long unexplained fever or weight loss in children, and screening before medicines that suppress immunity.
