Thyroglobulin is the protein the thyroid gland uses to build its hormones. This test looks for antibodies against that protein, which indicate the immune system is acting on thyroid tissue. The same antibodies interfere with the measurement of thyroglobulin itself, so the two are often checked on the same sample.

Doctors order it for an enlarged thyroid, abnormal thyroid hormone levels, suspected autoimmune thyroid disease, and follow-up after treatment for thyroid cancer.
