Insulin is the hormone the pancreas releases to move sugar from the blood into the cells. Taken in the fasting state, the level shows how much the pancreas has to put out simply to keep sugar steady at rest. It is usually read alongside the fasting sugar from the same visit.
Doctors order it for suspected insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian syndrome, unexplained weight gain and episodes of low sugar.
