A fasting sample is drawn first, then a weighed dose of glucose dissolved in water is given, and further samples are taken at one hour and at two hours. The three readings show how quickly the body pulls sugar out of the blood after a load, which no single reading can show. You will need to stay through the test and not eat, smoke or walk about between the samples.
Doctors order it for suspected diabetes where the fasting sugar is borderline, for screening in pregnancy, and to look into low sugar episodes.
