Once the blood sugar climbs past a certain point they can no longer keep up, and the excess appears in the urine, which is what this test looks for. It is a simple check and is usually read alongside a blood sugar value.

Doctors order it for screening in suspected diabetes, as part of routine diabetes follow-up, and when a blood sugar reading has come back raised.
