The fasting sample shows the level the sugar settles to when nothing has been eaten through the night. The sample taken two hours after lunch shows how well the body clears the sugar that comes from a meal. Read side by side, the pair says a good deal about sugar handling that neither reading gives on its own.
Doctors order it for suspected diabetes, for routine follow-up of someone on diabetes treatment, and when symptoms such as excessive thirst or passing urine often are being looked into.
