A drop of blood is spread on a glass slide, stained and searched under the microscope for the parasite living inside the red cells. Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are reported separately because the two behave differently and are treated differently. The parasite is easiest to find in a sample taken while the fever is up.
Doctors order it for fever with chills and rigors, particularly in the rainy season or after travel to a malaria area.
