A haemoglobin below the expected range is what the word anaemia describes. The sample is collected into a tube containing an anticoagulant so the red cells stay whole until the analyser reads them. Only a small quantity of blood is needed for it.
Doctors order it for pallor, weakness, poor appetite, blood loss, and as part of routine antenatal and pre-operative checks.
