Haemoglobin is what makes blood red and what carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Measuring it is the usual first step in looking for anaemia. It is also the number repeated most often to follow whether iron or other treatment for anaemia is working.

Doctors order it for tiredness, breathlessness, giddiness, heavy periods, before surgery and through pregnancy.
