Blood is left standing upright in a thin graduated tube and the distance the red cells fall is read off the scale. When there is inflammation anywhere in the body, proteins in the plasma make the cells stick together and sink faster. The two-hour reading is taken where the doctor wants the settling followed for longer than the usual single hour.
Doctors order it for fever of unclear cause, joint pain and swelling, suspected tuberculosis, and to follow a known inflammatory illness over time.
