The plasma glucose is measured on the sample as it comes, so the figure reflects what you last ate and when. It is useful when a patient has symptoms and the doctor would rather not send them home to return fasting the next morning. A high reading is usually confirmed afterwards on a fasting sample.
Doctors order it for sudden weakness, giddiness, thirst or drowsiness, for routine checks in known diabetics, and before starting medicines that alter blood sugar.
