The four parathyroid glands sit behind the thyroid in the neck and release this hormone whenever blood calcium starts to fall. The reading is always interpreted next to a calcium result, since the pair together show whether the glands are working too hard, too little, or exactly as they should. A morning sample is preferred.

Doctors order it for high or low calcium found on an earlier report, kidney disease, thinning bones and repeated kidney stones.
