Beta human chorionic gonadotropin appears once a fertilised egg implants, and in the early weeks its level roughly doubles every couple of days. A blood measurement picks it up sooner than a urine strip and gives a figure, so two samples taken a few days apart show which way the level is moving. The same hormone is produced by certain tumours.

Doctors order it for confirming an early pregnancy, checking on pain or bleeding in the first weeks, following up a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, and monitoring some tumours.
