Prolactin is normally high in pregnancy and while breastfeeding and low at other times. Outside those situations a raised level can come from a pituitary growth, from thyroid underactivity, or from certain medicines including some used for nausea and mental health. Stress and even a difficult blood draw can lift it a little, so a single high reading is often repeated.

Doctors order it for irregular or absent periods, milk discharge from the breast, infertility, reduced sex drive or erectile difficulty in men, and suspected pituitary disorders.
