In men testosterone comes mostly from the testes and governs muscle bulk, body hair, sperm production and sex drive. Women make a smaller quantity in the ovaries and adrenal glands, and a raised level there can explain excess hair growth and irregular periods. The level in men is highest in the early morning and drifts down through the day, so timing of the sample matters.
