In women it rises sharply in the middle of the menstrual cycle to release an egg, so the day the sample is taken changes what the number means and the laboratory will ask about it. In men it shows whether the testes are being properly stimulated. The result is nearly always read together with FSH and the other reproductive hormones.

Doctors order it for irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, delayed or early puberty and low testosterone.
