In women this hormone makes the follicles in the ovary grow each month, and in men it supports the production of sperm. The level moves through the menstrual cycle, so the sample is generally drawn on a particular day, most often the second or third; the doctor will say which day suits. It is read along with the other reproductive hormones rather than alone.

Doctors order it for difficulty in conceiving, irregular or absent periods, delayed puberty, and to look into symptoms around menopause.
