Eosinophils are one kind of white cell, and their numbers go up when the body is reacting to an allergen or to a parasite. An absolute count gives the actual number present in a measured volume of blood, so unlike a percentage it does not shift merely because the other white cells have risen or fallen.

Doctors order it for long-standing cough or wheezing, asthma, skin rashes and itching, suspected worm infestation, and allergic rhinitis.
