Clotting depends on a chain of proteins in the blood, each one switching on the next. This test times how long a plasma sample takes to form a clot once that chain is started in the laboratory, which shows whether some step along it is slow or missing. It is also the usual way of following patients on heparin.

Doctors order it for easy bruising or prolonged bleeding, before surgery, to monitor heparin treatment, and while investigating a family history of bleeding disorders.
