These are two simple timings done at the same sitting. Between them they give a rough idea of whether the platelets are plugging a wound normally and whether the clotting proteins are doing their part. They are old and fairly crude measurements, so an unusual result generally leads on to more specific clotting studies.
Doctors order it for a quick check before minor surgery or a dental extraction, and when someone bruises or bleeds more than expected.
