The two results together give the blood group written the way you usually see it, as A positive, O negative and so on. Hospitals need this on record before a transfusion, because the blood given has to match. It is also noted early in pregnancy, since an Rh negative mother carrying an Rh positive baby is followed differently.
Doctors order it for transfusion and surgery planning, and as a routine record in pregnancy.
